Among the nice touches of Windows 8.1 Update 1, MS finally fixed the Type Cover 2 tap and drag bug. Can't speak for the touch cover, but I assume both are fixed.

    :eek:mg:

Thank god. I got rid of the type cover 2 partially for that reason. I found it near impossible to find the left mouse button without having to look at the touchpad. I'd consider buying one again, but now I'm holding off for the power cover.

Any other changes you're noticing? I'm a bit reluctant to make the jump to this...

I may be high but it seems to have fixed the high CPU utilization issue with mSD cards as well! Tested it quite a bit and not getting 20-30% at idle, finally!

yikes false alarm, after a reboot im still getting the high utilization. for some reason it didn't happen until my first reboot after the last KB was installed

What was the bug, can you explain ? And what is behavior now ?

I installed the Update 1, everything seems to be working fine, Internet Explorer seems quite a bit faster.

I've got a class 10 sandisk 64gb micro sd in my sp2. skydrive folder is on there and all my default file locations are in skydrive . Also got tons of Rosetta stone data on there though all my apps are installed to the built in storage. Mine idles at 1 or 2 %... haven't forced the update yet, not brave enough!

What king of card are you using and how is it set up?

Ok ignore that, I'm an idiot
I didn't read the post fully and haven't installed the leaked version, but it would be great if they have fixed it :)

I haven't updated, but my tap (right thumb down and hold) + drag (right pointer moves) works fine all the time.

I have updated and now there is a slight delay when I press the mouse button, I assume it's the timespan in which the system expects a second tap to detect it as "drag". Is there a way to tweak the time? As it is it seems too long for me.

Did anyone test whether this is a firmware upgrade, or is tap to drag entirely handled in software? Does the new behavior stick when booting with previous versions?

It's a Windows Update, so no firmware component. I have two Surface Pro 2 with a Type Cover each and I can confirm the functionality travels with the machine not the keyboard.

I have by now updated both with Update 1 and the March firmware and hardware updates an no problems.

Meh :(, that means that when using Linux, OS X, ... we won't have working tap to drag.

EDIT: Also, it means that you won't get tap to drag when using the cover via the Bluetooth wireless adapter.

Well as far as OSS, someone can always write a driver from the community...

I am not sure how you come to that conclusion, the update is in the driver software, not the firmware of the keyboard, so it's only up to whatever touchpad driver Linux or OS X uses. As far as BT is concerned, I would assume that the same driver is used, so it should work.

What I am sure about is that on Linux/OSX touchpad gestures will be the least of your problems, I rather was concerned about getting wireless to work :)

My handful of years of experience with FLOSS have taught me one thing: someone has to "be" the community! ;)

They don't use any touchpad driver at all but rather just use the "mouse emulation" mode of the touchpad. Yes, the firmware will convert two finger pan gestures into mouse wheel events, including horizontal mouse wheel events. And map two finger taps to right click button, and one finger tap to left button.

    But not tap to drag.

The touchpad on the type/touch cover v2 seems to follow MS's "precision touchpad" protocol, which documents these two modes: mouse emulation and "touch screen mode". In the latter mode the touchpad will just report all the finger events. This is the mode that Windows 8.1 uses to escape the limitations of the mouse emulation protocol, and in order to enable the advanced gestures (e.g. zoom, right swipe for charms, etc.). Because it is a new protocol, different from Synaptics, no drivers exist for any platform other than Windows 8.1, so these platforms must for the time being use the touchpad in "mouse emulation".

As why it would not work when using the Bluetooth adapter, there is this quote from the Surface touchpad gestures support page:
Surprise! If you've read the previous paragraph, you can easily figure out why they mention exactly this set of gestures: for some reason, they fall back to mouse emulation mode when using the Bluetooth adapter!

BTW, Wireless already works under Linux. It still does not work under OS X but because of the secrecy of Apple for everything involving 802.11 drivers I say it will never work.
