Is there a way to block ads on a system level?
I don't want ads in IE and I do not want ads in my apps. They are just annoying and not personalized anyway.

MVPS Hosts file is very effective.
You might need to exclude the Hosts file from your AV product and set DNSclient service to Automatic.

Not perfect (and not automated updates) but it definitely helps. Thanks :) Maybe we'll see some further advanced solutions like in Android. But I realize that this is something different here.

You can register for update notifications on MVPS site. You might also like HostsMan.
