Hello ! Im excited to try 8.1 rtm on my surface rt. I question I need to ask is .. I have downloaded the file that has the drivers already in it. I have gotten my rt's key. But when I open the text file with the instructions . there are two keys in there to use to install . which one do I use to install on surface rt. and then after install I use my surface key to activate. Thanks in advance

you use the CoreArm key ending in -6VHPJ for installation. Then your own key to activate after installation.

I followed the instructions here and on xda-developers and installed 8.1. I was pleased with 8 on the RT and actually delighted by 8.1. The RT feels even snappier and smoother with 8.1. I selected to update (rather than a clean install)... all settings and data were preserved.

Did anyone else notice that there is MORE free space available with 8.1? After installing and running disk cleanup to remove windows.old I have 17.2GB free. That's 3-5GB more free than I had under 8.0 after running disk cleanup.

I'm generally new to the surface and I wanted to ask a question. If it's a stupid question then sorry lol. I'm coming from and iPad and whenever there was an OS update it would just be a free download and install. When 8.1 comes out would we have to pay to upgrade or is it also free?

Microsoft is saying that it will be a free update on 10/18. I'm not sure if I'll do this. I just wanted to the level of complexity. I'm thinking there will be some type of Windows Genuine Advantage check or something. You never know with MS. Although Theoretically you may be able to recover to 8.0 if you created the USB recovery drive.

Any takers on that thought.

It will be free. My experience is the opposite the only time a company has tried to charge me for a update was Apple when they released iOS 3.0.

I couldn't resist, I installed Windows RT 8.1 RTM today, and so far its amazing! 2 hours on connected standby and it hasn't even dropped 1% in battery, and that's awesome!(unless the battery indicator is faulty :D)

Once we install this 8.1 RTM, when the official one is release by microsoft will it just be a normal update you do on your surface or whole other installation?

Its done like a NEW installation, but you can choose to keep "all your files and settings". Only thing that was removed were my apps. But the installation is almost fully automatic!

Found a new function this morning in IE11, that I haven't heard of before. Reading view --> How to turn on the ?Reading View? mode in IE 11 of Windows 8.1 final [Video]
Really nice feature! Im loving Windows RT 8.1 RTM, so far! By the way, last night before I went to bed. I activated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, then put the device in connected standby, battery indication was at 93%. And when I woke this morning it had only dropped 2%, to 91%!

Knowing how I love to flash custom roms and kernels on my android device, im very tempted to try this on my new RT. but I think I will hold off for official windows store update. don't want to risk messing up the new 64b RT I bought for my woman. got it on ebay for only $249.

on the flipside, I do need to learn how to do this though. I like stuff like this.

based on the feedback, 8.1 for RT sounds like a winner breathing new life into the device. this device still has a look and feel that makes it seem like it was just released. amazing how MS created a product as sleek and light as this RT. RT and PRO has best design of any tablet IMO. very high end look and feel. plus feels solid.

although im typing this from my pro, I feel like going in the back to get my womans RT and play with it. it really is a nice device. battery life to me, is good already. then im hearing it only gets better with new windows version.

As I mentioned earlier to someone else this is the final release from Microsoft. Nothing will happen on the release day other than a few small updates Id have thought.

Connected standby is what the RT is in all the time. The power button only even really turns the screen off; WiFi and Bluetooth stay on and continue to check your emails etc.
