Mini displayport no audio output surface pro 2

So I got home after purchasing a mini displayport to hdmi and plugged it in, picture got on the tv, great. But the sound doesn't work, there's no output saying external device etc. when right-clicking the speaker icon and clicking settings, just the surface pro's speakers and earphones.

It does say on the mini displayport package that it supports thunderbolt, does this have anything to do with it?

What kind of adapter is it? I bought one from a company called Cable Matters on Amazon and it worked fine with both picture and sound.

It seems all i had to do was connect it to a different tv of same brand and it must have installed some drivers that made it work again
