Template for the Modern Tablet?

Was randomly watching an 1993 episode of Star Trek-The Next Generation- Series 6 Episode 22 "Suspicions" on BBC America. The hand held data devices looked awfully familiar. The form factor and size was amazingly similar to a very popular tablet of today.;);)
But I thought when it was introduced there was a claim of originality.:) Is my perception inaccurate?

Tablets were used on the Enterprise, but the pen holder kept breaking, the connection to Star Fleet Command would be sketchy, and Doctor McCoy hated anything that Spock liked, or did not have a permanently attached keyboard and sat under a desk. On the other hand, it did have IGPS*, and the dilithium battery life was awesomeness.
* Inter-Galactic Positioning System. They wanted to call it Universal Positioning System, but the fleet of slow cargo vehicles were already using those letters.

This is what you want, for some serious geek cred. It looks fantastic on the SP3. If you use it on a machine without a touch-screen interface, it is pretty cool because if you just randomly tap the screen while the screensaver is going, it totally looks like you are interacting with the LCARS gui!

Also if you use it on a machine with dual monitors, it displays different animations on each monitor, so your displays aren't just being mirrored.
