3 slave monitors with dock and USB adapter

I'd like to start using my SP4 with three monitors. If I purchase a dock, I know I can get two with the built in DP connectors.

Could I run a third monitor using a USB-HDMI adapter plugged into the hub?

Also, would the Surface display be available with the above scenario?

Thanks!

Yes, you can use an USB to HDMI adapter to add additional monitors, the technology it is using is by DisplayLink which creates a virtual display adapter. The one caveat is that it relies on the CPU to drive that monitor. I've used 2x DP monitors off the dock, a USB driven monitor and the Surface Pro. Depending on load though you may see some lag.
