A Different Take on Product Update Cycles - What do you think?

This article about the iPad Air 2 talks about hardware being well ahead of the software and why (maybe) a two year update cycle might make sense.

I think generally for productivity software its true.

Games on the other hand tend to burry any hardware available. Maybe that's because Games are poorly constructed and inefficient or lets put it more politically correct they don't optimize for available hardware but can be easily configured to consume all available resources.
Lets leave games out of the discussion for now. There are a few categories of apps that leverage higher end components. Beyond that, the real work in tablet computing hardware today is in lowering power requirements/extending battery life & reducing size.

Apps though are not at parity between Windows and other platforms. However it could be argued that Windows is lacking in the simpler low end apps and it doesn't need higher performance either. There's a convergence in both directions.

Looking at the recent history of Intel upgrades it might be argued that one should only upgrade on Tock cycles skipping the Tick. That of course would lead to a corresponding strategy change and become self defeating. :)
