How do you address Security / Device Tracking.

I'm considering giving up my ipad for a surface, but tablet theft and subsequent data theft and identity theft is all very high risk with a tablet.

Apple actually addresses this quite nicely with the self destruct all data after 10wrong logins feature, the find-my ipad GPS tracking feature is fairly robust and just plain works, and I also have an app called IcaughtU that uses the front facing camera to take a picture and email to me whenever someone enters the wrong login password.

I'm not aware of win8 integrating any features like these. Also with a bootable USB drive (I assume it is bootable?) just about everything is bypassable. Is anyone using any 3rd party apps that mimick the Apple features described above? If M$ is going to invest heavily in the tablet market, they really need to step up security measures.

Just because you aren't aware, doesn't mean MS doesn't have security measures, remember most of the professional world still uses Windows PCs/Laptops for business and there are plenty of third party software companies that help protect your information.

Windows also offers it with your SP3:

You can turn on bit locker and it pretty much encrypts your hard drive.

Google is your friend, invest a little more time using a search engine before bashing MS for nothing.

Thanks for the answers and the slightly inflammatory flamebait too.

I am familiar with bitlocker, despite not having used it. It's my understanding that it requires either a USB drive attached or a second password entry every time you login to the tablet - is that accurate?

I will try the tracking app out you suggested - sounds interesting.

What about the camera feature - have to admit that one is pretty slick - any suggestions?

Nope...that is a configured option, Bitlocker OOB is transparent to the user....

I have included a link below to how this works with devices like the surface. If the device has a TPM like the surface then by default the HD is encrypted. If you really want to get clever you can even adjust the encryption level beyond the default.

Where Win 8 differs from a phone is that once the device reaches the max failed attempt threshold, rather than wipe the device automatically it places it into bitlocker recovery mode which has the same effect to protect the data but still gives you a chance to enter the recovery key to get the system back. If the device is connected to an MS Exchange you also get a remote wipe option amongst other things.

+ 1 for Prey. Basically, all the LoJack functionality, without any of the support staff. If your computer gets stolen or goes missing, YOU log into your dashboard, mark it as stolen, and have it start generating logs/location data for the cops. LoJack on the other hand, their support people do all that for you. Costs more though, obviously.

I think you track up to 3 machines for free with Prey. So you can evaluate it on your SP3 if you want for free.
