Lobos, I run Kaspersky Internet Security on my SP3, first SP, and all my computers. Some years ago it used to cause problems at times and slow things down. The last 3 years or so it no longer causes slowdowns or any problems that I can see.

Thanks a lot @annabanana and @jnjroach! Yes, Connected Standby compatibility is a valid concern. However, security is another and Defender seems to constantly hit rock bottom in major reviews. The endpoint security is probably a different matter.

While I don't do fishy downloads, I have to use third parties' flash drives quite frequently, which is a constant source of concern for malware. That's why I'm a little more focused on the security department.

Kaspersky and Norton both seem to have a good track record, so I'll give Kaspersky a shot for now.

Anyone else experience coming out of sleep or hibernation and the touch screen just failing? Without having a keyboard plugged in, I'm forced to reboot. (not all of us are looking for problems, some of us get presented with problems that seriously hinder the use of the device)

How often does this happen? It is one of two things, the HID Touch Driver is crashing as it comes out of Hibernate or its the start of hardware issue.

I think my computer habits are similar to yours. I just don't access obscure or suspicious content online. I just have neither a need nor desire for it. As such, I believe I have only experienced one, perhaps two, computer viruses in the past 15-years, and it has been many years since. I used AVG early on, but I've been using Defender exclusively since shortly after its release. That said, I don't utilize flash drives in the manner you describe, so I really can't speak to that.

For some perspective, I'm in an IT professional (we use System Center Endpoint Protection at the office) and IT is my passion, so I spend an inordinate amount of time on the internet at home as well (and no porn - I know, go figure). Defender has been more than adequate for me.

Here and there. I think it software, not hardware. The most recent time, I got half the password entered, there was some sort of popup, nothing of significance, and then nothing. Couldn't even do the swipe down to turn off having held power button. Another time I recall it happening, something to do with the ease of access controls got turned on, and all of a sudden touch was disabled to the point that I couldn't type, but was still enabled to the point that the device turned on its audio and started telling me what buttons I was pressing etc. I'm not too fussed, my machine is slowly falling apart, so just living with it until such a time that I am forced to return it for a faulty hardware claim. Sure I could send it back right now, but I love it too much. I'll just wait till I have no choice in the matter. Kickstand will probably only last a month or so more by the look of things.

How come your device, which should not be more than a few months old, be in such a state - for example - "kickstand will probably only last a month or so..."? This is not an impertinent question; I am genuinely interested. I ask because I bought my device on June 20th and it looks, feels and operates like as it is brand new! And, I push it a lot.

Not even 1 month old. The first issue with the kickstand was that it is loose. Once opened, no matter the position, there is about 0.5 to 1cm of play, so if I pick it up and give it a little shake, the kickstand shakes up and down and rattles. Not too long later, I've found that where the kickstand meets the centre of the device, there is a silver strip. This is just metallic tape, and in the centre, the tape goes into the surface, basically it gives the kickstand support and stops it from bowing. My tape is coming off, meaning that when I now close the kickstand, it bends out from the device in the centre by about 1-2mm and if I press on it, it kind of tries to re-seal itself with the tape, and will then be flush, however I have to do this every time. I think this is cause by changing the angle of the kickstand via the centre, not the edges. For instance if you;ve got it balanced on one leg, and just press it forward, it exerts pressure on the kickstand, not the hinges. Not entirely impressed.

Anyway, today's news is that I've a brand new pen in the post. Free of charge, no need to return the old one. Today my side buttons stopped working, but the other features of the pen continued to work. MS think it;s a hardware fault and nothing software side can resolve the issue. So I've a brand new pen in the post, and can keep the old one which still writes just fine, just doesn't have the ability of using the side buttons.

For me the Surface filled a void, i used to have the Transformer Infinity Tablet/keyboard combo which was great but lagged dramatically. I then got the Lenovo Yoga 11s and that was amazing but still was missing the tablet aspect. (Yes I know I could flip over Yoga screen but didn't feel solid and bounced too much)

So the Surface pro 3 felt solid, and no bounce when tapping on screen. I love the full power of windows and works great for work and social/browsing, etc..
