The folks at iFixit recently got hold of the Microsoft Surface Pro 2 and ran it through their tear-down gauntlet. They came away with some surprising results and some not-so-surprising results. The surprise was that many of the innards of the Surface Pro 2 where very similar to the Apple MacBook Air. What is not surprising is that the new Surface Pro 2 is nearly impossible to repair. In fact, it scored only a 1 out of 10, which is the lowest rank possible on their repairability score. Here are some of the reasons why it is so tough to fix:
  • Very hard to remove and replace the battery
  • Opening the device is extremely hard - while no glue is used, it has a ridiculous 90 screws holding it together
  • It contains a fused glass panel and LCD which are a big problem because if your front breaks you have to replace them both
  • The process of opening the tablet is massively risky because you could easily tear one of four ribbon cables connecting the display
All this means is that you should took extra special care of your new SPro2! Check out the link below for more details and more pics of the tear down process.
