Send messages through homegroup

Is it possible to send messages through your network to other computers using homegroup? It use to be possible using Windows 7...
I have googled it but have not come up with a way that works.

I'm pretty sure the net send command was dropped in Windows 7/Vista. There is an app you can install to do that but it isn't free.

Microsoft is all about Skype Messenger these days. That should work if everyone is connected to the Internet.
