Seeing now that Microsoft's solution for pen storage on the SP3 is an elastic loop that you are to attach to the TypeCover with an adhesive backing, it got me wondering... who came up with the idea, them? Or us a year ago...

I don't know if the thin-ness of the SP3 prevented the pen from being stored internally, or what, but in my mind that is still one of the most egregious design flaws.

Anyways it was a bit humorous when I saw that pen loop a couple days ago in a SP3 review photo, I said "hey that looks familiar..."

Good call!!!!!

That said, I am not sure if MS does have a viable option for the Pen given the profile of the SP3 - as you note. It would be difficult to keep a streamlined profile AND find a place to place the Pen. This is one of the problems have - we want everything, preferably free (or at a very low cost). For example, we rail again MS for pricing their devices high, yet we want the best of quality. We want the very best of design but baulk at the high costs of design, we want a slim profile and light weight, but we ignore the physicality of components etc. Have you (and I mean this in general and not specifically You, in particular) not noticed the reviews - in the latest instance - of the SP3. It seems the reviewers want that what is physically impossible - at least at this point in time.

Part of it I think is the expectations of those users who came from the convertible tablets, where you used to actually have pen "garages". Every single Tablet PC I owned had internal storage of the pen, and of course it was expected. So the Surface comes along but provides you with no way to internally store the pen, it is probably missed a lot more by those who came from the Tablet PC days, vs. those are just now starting to use tablets or the Surface. They've never had the experience of stowing the pen, and probably don't miss it as much.
