Microsoft should free Windows RT and release it as an Open Source Project.

Windows RT on an iPad Pro, iPad Air, Samsung Galaxy Note 12.2, Galaxy Tab S 10.5, or an upcoming Exynos 7580, 7430, Snapdragon 820, Tegra X1 with Open Source backing could take off and finally kickstart the modern Windows App ecosystem. Not to mention it would be great for all the existing Surface RT and Surface 2 devices out there.

An unshackled Windows RT could be the best thing for the Microsoft ecosystem since Windows 3.1, XP, or 7 and just might succeed where Universal Apps will fail.

There are millions of never to be updated Android devices stuck on an old outdated Android Version ripe for the taking.

The possibilities are endless.

But that would also mean Open Sourcing 99% of Windows 8.x and 10 as RT is a direct port of Windows x86/amd64

That model works for ZenServer and CloudStack so there's learnable experience available.
They could also clearly fork as well as long as the App API's are preserved nothing is lost.

If Universal Apps wont run on RT which were told they will not there's a fundamental schism with 10 and as for 8.x it was dead anyway :)

There is very little chance that this will happen....it is sad as RT had potential and the Lumia 2520 and Surface 2 could run Windows 10 Mobile really well (RT and it's Tegra 3 wouldn't).
