When I work on an external screen, the command-texts and icons in the PowerPoint screen are much larger than in (say) Word. So gigantic letters for File, Start, etc and normal text in Word. See image below. Why is this and how do I set to normal size?

Yes, I see that problem. It is well known by Microsoft that the "Ribbon" in Microsoft Office 2013 and 2016 is missing the option for custom sizing by the user. An improvement is being developed.
