Guide for ripping and putting DVDs onto Microsoft Surface Pro tablet for enjoyment on the go.
The question comes up with the release of Microsoft's Surface Pro for Windows 8: how to watch DVD movies on Surface Pro tablet? Well, since the Windows 8 based tablet PC doesn't have a DVD-ROM that can play DVD movies, you may have to find another way to get the work done. If you haven't got a way to make it, you can follow this simple guide to rip DVD movies to Surface Pro compatible videos. It's much easier than you may think and only comes with some help from a third-party software. But it can be done.
First, free download and install Pavtube DVD Ripper:
(Download here if you using Mac 10.5 or 10.6)
Frankly, the program is very easy to use for editing and conversion. I've had success using it to convert DVDs to Microsoft Surface RT (of course, it can used for Surface Pro) playable format and I've found the quality to be excellent, and see no difference when compared to playing the discs themselves. With it, you can not only rip video from DVD for Surface Pro/RT, but also other portable media players like iPhone, iPad, iPod, HTC, Samsung, PS Vita, Windows tablet/Phone, Xbox 360, etc.
Guide: How to convert and play DVD movies on Microsoft Surface Pro tablet
Note: The quick start guide below uses DVD Ripper for Windows screenshots. The way to transfer DVD to Surface Pro or RT in Mac (Lion and Mountain Lion) is the same. Just make sure you've downloaded the right version.
Step 1: Load DVD
Run the program, then click "Load DVD" icon to add the DVD files you want to play on your Surface Pro from DVD disc, DVD folder, ISO or IFO. As you can see, loaded files can be previewed in the right preview window and you can take snapshots of your favorite movie scenes.
Tips: You can click "Edit" to customize your videos by cropping, rotating, adding watermarks, adjusting video effects or trim to get the very part you want. For ripping DVD with subtitles, you can click "Subtitles" bar to choose your wanted subtitles.
Step 2: Choose output format
Click "Format" bar, you can get optimized videos for your surface Pro under "Windows > Microsoft Surface Windows RT/Pro H.264 Video (*.mp4)". The output videos could fit on your device perfectly.
Tips: If you like, you can click "Settings" to change the video encoder, resolution, frame rate, etc. as you wish. Remember the file size and video quality is based more on bitrate than resolution which means itrate higher results in big file size, and lower visible quality loss.
Step 3: Start DVD to Surface Pro conversion
After all the above settings, simply click "Convert" button to start converting DVD to Surface Pro MP4 video.
Step 4: Transfer the result videos to your Surface Pro via USB cable
