Microsoft is busy bragging about the capabilities of the cameras in their new Lumia 950 line of smartphones. We can't really blame them after checking out these impressive images (one shown above and the rest are in the thread below). From what Microsoft indicated in their blog post, their intent with the new features of these smartphone cameras is to offer up professional level controls, but to make it very easy for the user to pull off without resorting to manual modes.

The phone's camera is able to make decisions of what settings to use on the fly. It makes adjustments depending on the scene and the user's method of capturing the shot. Microsoft even included a Rich Capture mode. This feature uses two different exposure times for the exact same image. It does this by using a short exposure for moving objects, while also including a longer exposure for those static elements in the picture.

On top of that, the fancy new triple LED flash might actually be more than just a marketing gimmick. Here's a quote with a few more details,

One feature that stands out is the new flash technology. The natural three LED (red, green, blue) flash automatically matches the colors of the ambient light. This means that if you’re taking a photo outside at twilight, the flash will produce a blue light to complement the bluish color of the scene, and if you’re taking a photo of a candlelit dinner, the flash will adjust to expose candlelight.

It's amazing how far Microsoft is taking the small innovations for smartphone tech. While the other smartphone makers like to tussle over faster processors, more megapixels and other mostly meaningless features, Microsoft is building in extra usability and features that anyone can take advantage of.
