Unfortunately, using a USB-C to USB-A adapter will not work. You'll need to purchase a Surface Connect to USB-C charging cable. With this configuration, you can utilize the 140W C1 charging port to enable Fast Charging of your Surface Pro 6 per the PD 3.1 specification.

There is a decent assortment of Surface Connect to USB-C cables on Amazon that you can choose from.

Check the relative power requirements of the SP6 and SP9 and if the power plugs are the same...

This is a similar adapter to which I got from Amazon which worked with the SP6...Read the reviews to see what they say about SP9...
