Summary: Want to transfer and play AVI video files on your Microsoft Surface 2? Check out this tutorial to get the easiest and best method.

Microsoft Surface 2 is a new tablet that comes to succeed last year's Surface RT. With a slightly thinner and lighter design, the Surface 2 sport a much better 10.6" screen, upping the resolution from 1366 x 768 pixels to 1920 x 1080 pixels - a much-needed improvement, which we think is better for browsing the web, playing games and watching videos.

While, Surface 2 only plays videos it supported. So I googled and I find Surface 2 supports a lot of media formats including:

    Surpported Video:

Formats: MOV, WMV, AVI, M4V, MP4, MTS

    Codecs: H.264, H.263, Motion JPEG, MPEG-4(Part 2), VC-1, WMV 3(WMV 9), XviD, DivX

    Compstible Audio:

Codecs: AAC, Dolby Digital, MP3, WMA, MPEG-1 Layer I, Layer II, MPEG-2, ULAW, PCM, ADPCM

Needless to say, AVI is not included here. To watch AVI on Surface 2, you’d better convert your AVI to Surface 2 compatible format like MPEG-4/H.264 MP4 format. Now follow this article; you will learn how to accomplish this easily within a few clicks.

The tutorial about how to convert AVI to Surface 2 supported file format

To begin, free download Surface 2 Video Converter or Surface 2 Video Converter for Mac.

The software has a codec pack that enables conversion between different video and audio file formats, it can convert AVI, MOV, AVI, FLV, MPG, etc to Surface 2 supported file format such as mp4 with the best quality.

If you have any requirements of outputting 3D (Side-by-Side, Top-Bottom, Anaglyph) in AVI/MP4/AVI/MOV/WMV formats, you are suggested to try this Video Converter Ultimate (Mac Verison: iMedia Converter for Mac)

Step 1: Load AVI video files to this Video to Surface 2 Converter

Download the Pavtube Video Converter on your computer, install and run the program, add videos.

You can choose to import videos or the entire folder by clicking the top left two icons.

Step 2. Choose a proper format for Surface 2.

Click "Format" drop-down list and choose "Windows-> Microsoft Surface Windows RT/Pro H.264 Video (*.mp4)" as the compatible MP4 preset with best video quality. Or you can choose other presets if you don't need full size videos.

Step 3. Customize video specs for Surface 2 (Optional).

If you are not satisfied with the default output video specs, click the "Settings" beside "Format" bar to enter Profiles Settings interface. Hit to adjust target video size, bitrate, frame rate and other settings here. Usually the higher bitrate you choose; the larger file size and better video quality it will be.

Step 4. Edit source video or adjust target video settings (Optional)

Pavtube Video Converter provides basic editing functions before conversion; you can enter the video editing window by hitting the pencil-like "Edit" icon on the top to free trim, crop, add watermark, edit audio and subtitles.

Step 5. Start AVI Videos to Surface 2 Conversion.
