Although you can easily add music, pictures, videos, and documents to your Surface RT tablet, chances are that you can’t open them. Due to lack of Windows Media Player, the Surface RT supports very limited formats, and MKV is one that the tab does not play. If you’d like to put 1080p videos to Microsoft Surface RT for the following travel, it is advised that you encode MKV to 720p MP4, the best format that Surface RT plays.

Here is a step by step guide for Mac users to easily stream MKV videos to Surface RT tablet from Mac OS X.

The following guide shows how to down convert 1080p MKV to 720p MP4 format for Microsoft Surface RT playback using Pavtube Video Converter for Mac. You can test the conversion with a trial of the software, but note that a trial puts watermark on converted videos.

Step 1. Load MKV to Microsoft Surface RT Video Converter.

Launch the Mac Surface RT video Converter, and click “Add Video” on the upper left to load MKV files.
