Just got October Update?

I'm curious why I just got the October update on my Surface Laptop 2 (purchased in February). Shouldn't it have shipped with this update? Isn't a May update due out this month? How can I ensure that my PC gets updates in a timely manner?

The October Update did have an issue which caused automatic updates to be withdrawn for awhile.

To make sure you get all the updates you are entitled to going forward, visit here:
Download Windows 10

And check your Windows Update settings.

And (where I think improvement is needed) Microsoft doesn't update the software with which a device is shipped. For example: I've had 7 Surface 3 devices...all were delivered with the first version of Windows 10, so not one of the most recent versions)
