Does anyone else have colored boxes when you access the 'featured' section on News? Im guessing they are background colors for icons.

You mean just below where it says "featured" at the top left quadrant? If yes, in my case, those are buttons to access specific news sources like the Guardian, NYT etc etc. They were there by default.

yes, I have the same color backgrounds, only with the text. have you tried uninstalling the app and reinstalling it?
