SMS in Windows VS Skype

I've been waiting for Skype to become something that I can use for SMS and can't wait any longer. I've moved from Verizon and miss the Messages application.

What is everyone using?

I'm disappointed with Skype. It is my impression that it is not useful unless all parties are on it and they have previously agreed to meet at a specific time. In addition, getting all of my Outlook contacts in the directory remains a mystery. The instructions that I've gotten so far are useless.

I use Skype with my family and a distant friend... it can be a bit hit and miss but mostly I find it syncs up pretty well and all my messages show on computer/iPhone/Surface. What else do you need?
