HowTo Wi-Fi Direct Printing on Surface 3

I have a Dell Printer that supports Wi-Fi Direct printing. However, I cannot seem to make the Surface 3 work properly with it. I can enable it on the printer, and see the access point. I can connect to it fine.

However, the point of Wi-FI Direct is that you are supposed to be able to stay connected to your wireless network, and still use the Wi-Fi Direct connection independently. I cannot figure out how to make that happen.

Does anyone have any experience trying to use this function on the Surface 3? Having to disconnect from the internet and connect to the wireless on the printer defeats the whole purpose.
