Windows 10 Activation Problem Need Help

So I had an old laptop that was Windows 8.1 and fully updated so I upgraded to windows 10. But its not activated. Which is weird, it was a free upgrade. Somebody please help.

Start by doing this:

Login to your www.microsoft.com account. Look for your laptop in Devices. If you had a legal and proper copy of Windows 8.1, it will be listed there.

Just saw a post where it took 3 days of trying before it activated.
