There's a great article at The Verge about early surface prototypes. I'm glad MS release this as so many people think MS just thru it together and never considered things like size, weight, etc.

Surface concept was still Bill Gates' time. He was demonstrating it on a "table" in one Microsoft event that I remember.

PixelSense was long before the current tablets know as Surface (so not an evolution) though Surface was its original name too. It works entirely differently unless you mean the concept of Surface simply applying to any surface becoming a computing surface.
