External Blu-ray player software recommendations

I have a USB3 external BR drive, but haven't found a decent player for it. I'm using a trial version of software & it's $70 to buy (that ain't happening). But even that software wouldn't play a disc without periodic freezes.
Are there any recommendations for BR player software for Surface/Windows 8.1?
