NFC stickers

I tried placing an NFC sticker under the surface kickstand but my doesn't seem to read it. Does is have something to do with it being magnesium alloy? (have an original Surface)

I placed it on the touch covert (1st gen) and it worked.

The Surface doesn't have a NFC reader specifically because they would have had to use Polycarbonate or Plastic where the antenna was (Panos Panay personally made that decision), if you mean another device's reader can't read under the kick stand, then yes it is the casing blocking the NFC signal.
