it's under the kickstand, just below "Surface[SUP]TM[/SUP]"

You can also do this: From the Start screen (or Search Charm for the Start screen) type cmd and click on Command Prompt, in the command window type "wmic csproduct" - the number directly under identifyingNumber is the serial number.

As a follow on to this topic of registering the device, how do you do it AFTER the initial setup? I couldnt get mine to connect to the wireless (had another post about that and how i finally fixed it)....but now that I am up and running, I need to go back and register the device...how?

It took far longer navigating Microsoft's website than it should have, but I found out how to register mine today online. Go here: https://login.live.com/login.srf?wa=wsignin1.0&rpsnv=11&ct=1353363119&rver=6.2.6289.0&wp=MCMBI&wreply=https://www.microsoft.com/Surface/Handlers/SignIn.ashx?returnUrl=https%3a%2f%2fwww.microsoft.com%2fsurface%2fen-us%2fsupport&lc=1033&id=74335

and sign in with your Microsoft ID (the one you used to create your surface account) and it will guide you step by step on how to enter in the serial number on the back of your Surface.
