Is the adapter a required component it looks like it's just a converter from Mini DP to an HDMI female and I would still need a standard HDMI cable to the display. Can I use the Mini Displayport to HDMI cable like the one I posted in the previous post without the need to buy the adapter?

Yes you can. It should work. DisplayPort is backward compatible down to HDMI. The only adapter that has a circuitry inside is the VGA one, and the dual-link DVI.
Single-link DVI, and HDMI has no circuitry needed.

Well it seems as if Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cables are getting more popular again! When I was originally looking around they had just been made illegal...
