What Does Factory Reset Actually Do?

Does factory reset also wipe out any installed updates? There are reports over on WPCentral that a factory reset improves performance...There are also conflicting posts regarding just what factory reset does?

I thought it reset the table to it's just-out-of-the-box settings.

Actually Two Levels
Both set the Surface back to day one but one keeps your data ie: downloads, Docs, Music etc.

One of the things that is not retained on a reset is your Office RT update from "Preview" to full license. Not a big deal, but you do have to go back and re-download and reinstall the update. It's over 500MB, so it takes awhile.

Thanks very much for the quick response. I assume then, that the ~500 Mb Office Update falls in the category of "downloaded files" and will have to be re-applied?

Correct the Office update just needs to be downloaded and re-installed.
