Microsoft Surface mini tablet supposedly launching this spring

Apr 14, 2014 - 3:52 PM - by dgstorm

Microsoft has been rumored for quite some time to be working on a smaller Surface tablet, but the company has yet to make such plans official. However, Neowin says the tablet may be closer to launch than customers expect, with Microsoft now rumored to release it at some point in the second quarter of the year. According to the report, Microsoft’s Surface mini launch delay was intentional – a business decision – and not the result of Microsoft not being able to meet demand for Surface 2 and Surface mini tablets when it comes to production.

According to the publication, the smaller Windows tablet will be marketed as a note taking device rather than a productivity power horse. Thus, the Surface mini will come with support for pen input, “a proper pen, too, not an old-fashion stylus,” and could include additional or customized software to take advantage of the feature, as Microsoft is apparently interested in making the mini “’the best note-taking tablet’ on the market.”

Battle of the AIs: Cortana, Google Now and Siri Match Wits on Video [Poll]

Apr 14, 2014 - 2:43 PM - by dgstorm

Although Microsoft may be way behind in the mobile marketshare compared to Google and Apple, that doesn't mean their software isn't catching up fast. Here's video proof of that today. Microsoft's Cortana search-assistant AI goes head-to-head against Google Now and Apple's Siri in a battle of wits and capabilities. Cortana acquits herself well, as does each of the mobile assistants.

The tests were conducted with an Apple iPhone 5S, the Nokia Lumia Icon Windows Phone and the Motorola Moto X. A battery of real-world tests were performed from web-searches, to travel arrangements, calendars, voice-activated apps, navigating and more. Throughout the tests, Microsoft's new AI holds its own. Each of the software packages handle a few things a bit differently. After watching the video, it's hard for us to say if there was an absolute winner, but the fact that Cortana is still in beta bodes well for her future functionality improvements. She definitely didn't seem like a beta product at all.

Check out the video and let us know which AI seems to be the most capable in your estimation.

Cortana and Siri Battle to the Death on Arsenio Hall [PG-13 Language Warning]

Apr 10, 2014 - 1:40 PM - by dgstorm

We wanted to share this for the sheer entertainment value of it. Arsenio Hall got a bit "creative" with his guest stars recently. He interviewed Apple's Siri and Microsoft's Cortana on his show. Hilarity ensued as the two rivals had some "choice" words to say to each other.

[Editor's warning: the language is a bit "salty," so parental guidance is advised, although it's probably just PG-13.]

Of course, the ever-evolving Siri and Cortana database AI's weren't really on display, but were simply voice-acted scripts. Despite this, it got us to thinking... how long do you think it will be before an AI is programmed to actually pull something like this off?

This is what Microsoft's latest Windows In The Car looks like

Apr 07, 2014 - 2:42 PM - by dgstorm

Following Apple's unveiling of CarPlay at this year's Geneva Motor Show, Microsoft used its recent Build developer conference to reveal how it plans to allow the integration of its smartphones with automobiles. Instead of automakers using Microsoft programming to create their own infotainment interfaces, this would port your mobile phone's screen onto the car's touchscreen but with the look of the Windows "Metro" UI.

The system uses the Mirrorlink standard, which is (also) a rival to CarPlay, the major difference between the two being that Mirrorlink can port Windows, Android and Blackberry phone systems, and Google has its own Open Automotive Alliance dedicated to Android integration. Automakers won't have to choose just one, having come together to establish open standards that can incorporate the different systems.

Cortana for the Windows Phone Platform Has Some Humorous Talents

Apr 03, 2014 - 1:19 PM - by dgstorm

It seems the Windows Phone version of Cortana has been endowed with a sense of humor (or at least her engineers have one they are expressing through her). It turns out the Microsoft programmers who created Cortana have included some "easter egg" style comedy elements into the upcoming digital assistant. For example, if you ask Cortana to sing, she will oblige you with a brief snippet.

That's not all though, there are other entertaining easter eggs built into Cortana's programming. Check out the video above for a teaser. It will be great to see how they implement Cortana in the Surface product line in the future.
