Insiders reveal new Windows 9 details

Apr 21, 2014 - 1:42 PM - by dgstorm

Russian group WZOR, a reliable source of Windows-related leaks, revealed various details about the future of Windows in a new report, Myce says. According to the group, Windows 8.1 Update 2 will launch later this year bringing the highly sought after Start menu back to the desktop operating system – the OS update could be launched as Windows 8.2 as well.

Once it’s back, the Start menu will be here to stay in Windows 9 as well. The button will be found on Windows 9 computers with touchscreens and without, and it will also be present in the new Metro interface.

WZOR also said that Windows 9 could launch as a free update to users according to some rumors, but there’s no confirmation yet.

Even more interestingly, the group said that Microsoft is working on an operating system based in the cloud – apparently called “Windows Cloud.” The client software would be available to users as a free download, and it might resemble earlier Windows Starter editions. More advanced features would then be available only when a subscription is purchased, and it would require an active Internet connection.

Microsoft is Developing Google-Now Like Capabilities for Cortana

Apr 17, 2014 - 3:16 PM - by dgstorm

There's no denying that Google "rules the roost" when it comes to search engine capabilities. Their Google Now search service/product is second to none in accuracy and usability. Despite Google's expertise and massive lead in this arena, Microsoft is confident they can develop search capabilities for their Cortana digital assistant which will rival Google Now. Their brightest minds are hard at work crafting their own card based search system which is similar to Google Cards. Their plan is to imbue Cortana with these new abilities.

Here's a quote with more of the details,

Henceforward, Microsoft will offer custom search results inside Bing in a similar manner to how Google displays Google Now information, without actually fully copying Google’s way of doing things. Instead of showing various cards for specific notifications, Microsoft will display a strip at the bottom of the Bing.com homepage made up of multiple cards that will show personalized information.

“Starting today, we are unveiling a set of personalized cards on the Bing homepage that will help you keep track of things that matter to you,” the company wrote. “Set up your interests in Bing settings and you will start seeing personalized news, weather, flights, and stocks with more to come – all as part of the search experience.”

In order to customize their experience, Windows users will simply have to sign into their Microsoft account and set up interests, in order for Bing to track certain information. As long as they stay logged in, Bing will remember their preferences across various devices and apps, including the Cortana assistant and the Bing Sports app support as well.
What do you guys think? Microsoft is arguably the greatest software manufacturer in the world... can they build search features for Cortana that will give Google Now a run for its money?

Microsoft Surface mini tablet supposedly launching this spring

Apr 14, 2014 - 3:52 PM - by dgstorm

Microsoft has been rumored for quite some time to be working on a smaller Surface tablet, but the company has yet to make such plans official. However, Neowin says the tablet may be closer to launch than customers expect, with Microsoft now rumored to release it at some point in the second quarter of the year. According to the report, Microsoft’s Surface mini launch delay was intentional – a business decision – and not the result of Microsoft not being able to meet demand for Surface 2 and Surface mini tablets when it comes to production.

According to the publication, the smaller Windows tablet will be marketed as a note taking device rather than a productivity power horse. Thus, the Surface mini will come with support for pen input, “a proper pen, too, not an old-fashion stylus,” and could include additional or customized software to take advantage of the feature, as Microsoft is apparently interested in making the mini “’the best note-taking tablet’ on the market.”

Battle of the AIs: Cortana, Google Now and Siri Match Wits on Video [Poll]

Apr 14, 2014 - 2:43 PM - by dgstorm

Although Microsoft may be way behind in the mobile marketshare compared to Google and Apple, that doesn't mean their software isn't catching up fast. Here's video proof of that today. Microsoft's Cortana search-assistant AI goes head-to-head against Google Now and Apple's Siri in a battle of wits and capabilities. Cortana acquits herself well, as does each of the mobile assistants.

The tests were conducted with an Apple iPhone 5S, the Nokia Lumia Icon Windows Phone and the Motorola Moto X. A battery of real-world tests were performed from web-searches, to travel arrangements, calendars, voice-activated apps, navigating and more. Throughout the tests, Microsoft's new AI holds its own. Each of the software packages handle a few things a bit differently. After watching the video, it's hard for us to say if there was an absolute winner, but the fact that Cortana is still in beta bodes well for her future functionality improvements. She definitely didn't seem like a beta product at all.

Check out the video and let us know which AI seems to be the most capable in your estimation.

Which AI/mobile assistant wins in this video?

Microsoft's Cortana
Apple's Siri

Cortana and Siri Battle to the Death on Arsenio Hall [PG-13 Language Warning]

Apr 10, 2014 - 1:40 PM - by dgstorm

We wanted to share this for the sheer entertainment value of it. Arsenio Hall got a bit "creative" with his guest stars recently. He interviewed Apple's Siri and Microsoft's Cortana on his show. Hilarity ensued as the two rivals had some "choice" words to say to each other.

[Editor's warning: the language is a bit "salty," so parental guidance is advised, although it's probably just PG-13.]

Of course, the ever-evolving Siri and Cortana database AI's weren't really on display, but were simply voice-acted scripts. Despite this, it got us to thinking... how long do you think it will be before an AI is programmed to actually pull something like this off?
