Double tap space bar to insert period won't work with touch cover

I love my SP2 but can't get the touch cover to insert a period when I hit the spacebar twice. I have checked my settings and the option is set to on.

My type cover 2 doesn't do this either. I think it is only a feature of the on-screen keyboard.

It doesn't even work there all the time, either.
