Using TV as monitor

When I connect the Surface to my TV with a mini display / HDMI cable the monitor resolution changes on both the RV and Surface. Do I need to change a setting somwhere?

you need to hit windows key + s and hit display and then choose to make your TV either the main display or extended and drag what you want over to it. if you need more than i am happy to help.
