Windows 10 Video app in Windows 8?

anyone try to extract the app which allows for MKV playback and port it to Windows 8? aren't all "metro" apps dlls/and files? Is this not possible since the Metro framework is a closed system?

WinRT is being updated in Windows 10 and I haven't heard if it is being back-ported to Windows 8.x.
