I've never used one on a tablet. I just use a microfiber cloth to clean the screen and have never had any problems.

Don't bother - unless you plan to operate your Surface with a knife, then you're unlikely to find it accumulating any scratches.

Alway use a screen protector on my mobile phone, never on a tablet. Phones are in pockets with keys, etc., so the extra protection is warranted. Tablets are seldom exposed to anything more dangerous than your finger tips. Just my opinion...
